Improving Safety at Mission Hills
UC Berkeley and SafelyYou are designing a safety system for reducing the number and impact of falls in memory care. Supported by awards from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health, we are doing a two-part study which places a video camera in the private room of participating residents to record fall events.
In the first part of the study, videos will be reviewed by our care team to reduce the likelihood of repeat falls.Through this process, our research team has previously reduced falls by as much as 80%, and we hope to show the fall reduction is reproducible with Assisted Living Rancho Mirage. In the latter half of the study, we will integrate live fall detection directly from the cameras and hope this will reduce the need for unnecessary emergency room visits due to previously unwitnessed falls.
